about

this is another example of me combining songs i had written for my old band into new songs for my new band.

the verses were written shortly after i went to new york city with one of my best friends to watch the ball drop for new year's eve 2008. if you've never been to times square on new year's eve...don't go.

we stood on the pavement, barricaded on 42nd street for nine hours. every time we needed to use the bathroom we had to go into a nearby restaurant and pay five dollars for a cookie (they only let patrons use their facilities and that was the cheapest thing on the menu). my new year's resolution was to never go to times square on new year's eve again.

but we did meet some crazy german girl who gave us jagermeister all night. that was nice.

the chorus was another old song that i had scrapped except for that one part, something about how i obsessively make to-do lists.

the bridge is part of yet another song i had written. on a trip to cincinnati with my old band i saw a billboard that had "hell is real!" written in huge block letters, looming over a farm in the middle of nowhere, ohio. i changed 71 north (the highway that leads from cincy to cleveland) to 80 west (the highway that leads from new york to cleveland) to make it fit, and the song was born!

lyrics

I try my best to fight it but the feeling still persists
I’m never satisfied unless I’m crossing things off lists
We try so hard, it takes so long
But we made it through this year.

Look at all the explosions in the sky!
500,000 strangers and another ten seconds I let pass by.
I’m not trying to be famous, I just don’t want to go unheard.
Here’s resolution number one:
Try not to break promises to yourself for once.
Don’t think of everything you missed
Just think of everything you’ve learned.

I’m doin’ alright, I’m doin’ fine (why don’t you take this on by yourself this time)
Why don’t you take this on by yourself this time? (I’m doin’ alright, I’m doin’ fine)
You’ve got me feeling like someone I don’t know, in a crowd of people and I’m still alone!
I’m of a certain disposition
Much more than a textbook case of a lack of ambition
I just can’t be tying myself down. I’m on the next flight out, see you around.

So just take 80 west
And you’ll get home fine
Within a few miles
We’re making good time
The sign on the billboard proclaims “hell is real!”
But no one could possibly know how I feel
